Acute iron overdose: IV infusion 15mg/kg/hr [until iron serum level is less than 60 micromol/L. Chronic iron overload: Usually maintenance dose in thalassaemia: SC infusion, 1-3g daily over 12-16 hrs 4-6 times weekly
Adverse reactions vary by agent. Counsel on common predictable effects and serious warning symptoms (allergy, severe rash, jaundice, unusual bleeding, severe GI symptoms, neurological changes). Report suspected ADRs via national pharmacovigilance channels.
